Samuel Palmer
Published in Hardcover by Ashmolean Museum (December, 1998)
Author: Colin Harrison
Average review score:

Glimpses of the earthly Paradise
Samuel Palmer as a young man was a disciple of William Blake, but had already struck out as an artist of the imagination. When he met Blake, Palmer confessed that he set about creating works of art "with fear and trembling." "Then you'll do," Blake said.

Harrison's book contains what look to me like superb reproductions, admittedly small, of early masterpieces such as the suite of six pictures that includes "Early Morning." Here also are some of the less distinctive landscapes of his long period (pictures from Italy, etc.); and magnificent etchings from late in his life.

Geoffrey Grigson's Samuel Palmer: The Visionary Years remains, in my opinion, the best first book to read about Palmer, but the reproductions in Harrison's book are much better and, in any event, Grigson is out of print.

Tony Harrison: A Modern British Poet
This collection of the work of Tony Harrison I found to be excellent. His accounts of his working-class background in Leeds, and his struggle to reconcile the conflicting worlds of his background and his present status as an acclaimed poet, constitutes the bulk of his work. He has a modern tone to his voice which speaks of universal themes of breaking away from one's past.

A Short History of Western Civilization: Since 1600
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (June, 1996)
Authors: Richard Eugene Sullivan, Dennis Sherman, and John Baugham Harrison
Average review score:

Pretty good.
The only thing I don't really like about this book is the categorization. It discusses Napoleon, then skips to the industrial revolution, but then comes back to Napoleon again and the Bourbon restoration. In my opinion, history books should follow the chronology of history, and include everything from one time period in one section.

The Spanish Economy : From the Civil War to the European Community
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (September, 1995)
Author: Joseph Harrison
Average review score:

Fulfilled its purpose- an Informative look at Spain
This book was relatively dry but that can be expected with an economic/historical topic. It did, however, give an informative look at Spain's economy in different subjects such as Agriculture and Industry. I learned a lot about Spain's economy and Spain in general from reading this book and I recommend it for anyone who wants to fulfill that purpose as well.

Spanish Memory Book : A New Approach to Vocabulary Building
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (January, 1991)
Authors: William F. Harrison and Dorothy Winters Welker
Average review score:

mneumonics:a novel approach
Although I'm aware of the criticisms of this approach (that you should learn a language through material already acquired in that language) how do you start out if you don't have little or no stuff to start with?

I haven;t referred to the Spanish Memory Book for a few months, yet I clearly remember most of the jingles, the words, and the meanings as well. In addition, I find myself making up my own jingles for Spanish and for other languages.

Stainless Steel Visions
Published in Hardcover by Tor Books (March, 1993)

Classic science-fiction short stories.
This is a collection of science fiction shorts from Harry Harrison, the creator of The Stainless Steel Rat and Bill The Galactic Hero; 13 of what he considers to be his best. (The rear cover blurb claims 14, but either they can't count, or I can't.)

These are the kind of science fiction short stories that got me interested in the genre, over twenty years ago when I was a kid. Some of them have aged better than others; I find myself shaking my head at some of the stock plots and characters. And some of the ideas that are addressed seem a bit dated, 25 years later. But all of them DO address ideas, ideas that were fascinating to a 14 year old 25 years ago, and would probably be fascinating to one today. Some of them, of course, are fascinating to a 41 year old today.

If you're a fan of old-fashioned science fiction, you'll love this book. If you're not, but are curious about what kind of stories cause those who are to be so, this book is for you. And if you're an inquisitive youngster who HASN'T read a lot of science fiction, this book is perfect for you. But if you've read a lot of classic science fiction, and have gotten a bit jaded, you may find this book a bit too reminiscent of an old copy of Analog magazine.
